Exhibition statement
The Silk Road was never a single road.
It was a breathing network — desert, mountain, steppe — stitched together by the slow movement of bodies, materials, and longing. Caravans crossed Central Asia over seasons, not days, carrying silk and spice, citrus and pigment, wood and scent.
Distance was not obstacle. It was the work itself.
In 1271, Kublai Khan established the Yuan dynasty. Across Eurasia, the Mongol Empire held open an unusual continuity of passage — a rare moment when far became reachable. Materials moved. Folded, stored, handled across climates, exchanged between hands that would never meet. Their surfaces absorbed time — scent, pressure, weather, contact.
The paintings do not map journeys. They are journeys — built through layering, erasure, repetition. Pigment applied, removed, reapplied. The same rhythm that shaped every route ever traveled.
The exhibition unfolds across four rooms. The first is a historical scene, establishing the Silk Road theme and grounding the viewer in its history. Each of the following three rooms is inhabited by a material that once traveled these routes:
— fruit, flower, wood. In collaboration with Candora Paris Atelier, three fragrances were created for the exhibition: one for each of the final three rooms. They do not illustrate the work. They deepen it — folding olfactory memory into visual space, the way scent once folded itself into the textiles that carried it across the world.
The number 1271 resolves, numerologically, to 11. Two vertical marks.
A threshold held open.
What once traveled across land arrives here as trace.
Not the routes.
The transformation.
Scent cards
Each scented room came with a printed card — a painting on one side, the fragrance and its story on the other. Fragrances crafted by Candora Paris Atelier.
